Yahnundasis

Yahnundasis Golf Club is a Walter Travis layout in northern New York that is approaching its 100th anniversary. Playing at a maximum of around 6,700 yards, the classic layout relies more upon keeping the greens well defended and, as fans of Travis know, with the tricky putting surfaces themselves.

Players will be given a taste of this formula right out of the gate. The opening hole is a very manageable 365 yards, but its large putting surface is fronted by a bunker, with sand at the left and back as well. The need for precision approaches will only be exaggerated as the round continues, most notably at Nos. 5 and 6.

The former is a par five; at just 505 yards, it’s certainly an eagle possibility for big hitters. That said, those making the long approach will need to consider the necklace of seven bunkers that completely surround the putting surface (not to mention the tiny pond fronting the green). After this approach, the 155-yard par three at No. 7 — with its own collection of seven greenside bunkers — will seem like a relative walk-in-the-park.
