Teugega
Donald Ross is the architect of record on more than 400 golf courses, so it would need to take something special for the Scot to have a special affinity with any given route. Teugega Country Club found a quick way to Ross’s heart, as the architect reportedly secured his first career hole-in-one on the 7th.
Although just 140 yards from the tips, players are much more likely to find themselves in one of the eight bunkers circling the putting surface off the tee than they are to find an ace. The club remains relatively untouched since Ross’s original design, allowing players to experience the 6,500 yard route much as it was for the designer on that fateful day.
That includes the continued existence of numerous cross bunkers, which have disappeared at so many Ross layouts. Examples of this design strategy Nos. 9 and 14. Although No. 7 certainly carries more history than any other hole on the property, No. 15 may make golf course aficionados salivate more as a par three, based on its resemblance to the famous No. 11 “Knoll” short hole at Essex County Club.
